The Williamson Ancestral Journey
The Williamson family story in East Alabama begins with two brothers, William S. Williamson and Matthew Williamson, who migrated from North Carolina to the recently surrendered Creek lands of Benton County, Alabama in the early 1800s. Not long after settling in the area, William met Eliza Warren, and the two were married on August 6, 1835. Their union produced three children before tragedy struck — Eliza passed away unexpectedly following the birth of their third child. In 1844, William remarried, taking Mary Ann Thrasher as his wife on May 5, 1844. Together, they raised a large family during their years of marriage, further strengthening the Williamson presence in the region. The Williamson brothers were more than just settlers — they were community builders. William, Matthew, and their brother Asa Williamson, who arrived in the 1850s, were instrumental in forming the Harmony Primitive Baptist Church in Abernathy, Alabama. William served faithfully as the church clerk for nearly a decade, reflecting his deep commitment to faith and community, until his death in 1880.
